Most Gracious Most Merciful The people won again By Sharique Naeem France has a tradition of revolutions. The latest, fifth revolution, was in 1958 and some now wonder whether the sixth is on its way. More than 3 million people marched the streets of France on 28 March 2006 and there were violent clashes with police in Paris. Certainly, the continuation of Prime Minister de Villepin, with the now notorious Sarkozy as interior minister, seems completely untenable. They have drawn the anger of so many different parts of the French society; it is hard to see how they will continue for long. This should serve as a clear lesson for Muslims and Islamic countries around the world. An apparently simple question about the rights of the employer to terminate the contract of the employed has caused such division amongst the people that they have resorted to street battles with the regime. France is the country in which the common people have revolted five times in order to defend what they considered to be their rights. This despite the fact that government after government aligned with trade unions has been sensitive to the needs of the workers here. Yet after all this, they still have trouble balancing the rights of the employer with the employed. What is the future of the Muslim societies where nobody has any rights?
