Different yardstick

A British Foreign Minister while addressing the British Prime Minister had once stated: “We must put an end to anything which brings about any Islamic unity between the sons of the Muslims. As we have already succeeded in finishing off the Khilafah, so we must ensure that there will never arise again unity for the Muslims, whether it be intellectual or cultural unity”. The recent events of destructions of sacrilegious shrines in Iraq, such as al-Askari Mosque in Samarra, bear a striking resemblance, to the attitude of colonial rulers, and it goes to show, how occupiers following the adage of “divide and rule” tend to try their level best, to put an end to both intellectual and cultural unity of the oppressed masses. On this neglect for cultural heritage, in the Iraq war, Mohamed Abdel-Maqsoud, an SCA representative in UNESCO has gone on record to have angrily said: “while there was a call for an urgent meeting among UNESCO representatives to stop the Taliban desecration and to restore the damaged statue, such a call has not been made for Iraq. Are not its monuments as important? Why do they not call for an international appeal to save them, or call for an urgent meeting to discuss the situation?”
