Merciful ‘Democracy’ in Iraq By Sharique Naeem Its is a common misconception that democracy converts the collective opinion of the masses into policies of the ruling government. The truth is that it is often the other way round. Take the example of Iraq. There is no doubt that the common Iraqi hates the occupation of his land and the resultant theft of resources. Hence the collective opinion of the Iraqis, if given the form of policies, would naturally go against plundering of their nation by foreign occupiers. Yet we can see exactly that happening in Iraq because, according to the US, Iraqis want democracy. This is clear contradiction, and exposes the myth of democracy that has been propagated in the Muslim world. The Nation (27th Nov. 2005)
